A.L. Hawke’s paranormal novel, Broomstick, features the narration of Cadence “Katie” Hawthorne. Katie is attending Hawthorne University to be a history major. She shares a dorm room with her best friend Maddie. Maddie convinces Katie to go to Dr. Johansen’s for dinner and to learn about a project about metaphysical techniques of history. Katie is skeptical about the entire presentation. She decides not to join the group. Maddie and Bryce, Katie’s crush and teacher’s assistant, join the group. Bryce sees Katie in the gym and asks her to a party at the Billington House. Despite the rumors of the house being haunted, Katie agrees. At the party, Maddie has Katie join a group playing with a Ouija board. The board gives the message “I LUV U” and identifies the message from Emily Hawthorne. Katie becomes angry thinking Maddie was playing a practical joke. As she is headed home her cell phone rings. Her father tells her that her mother died. Katie confides in Dr. Johansen about her mother’s death. She agrees to go to the teacher’s house again. Katie’s reality is about to change drastically. This paranormal story encompasses a witchcraft coven. I found some of the concepts of the occult disturbing but they add to the story. If you like reading books that have suspense and creepy elements in them, Broomstick is definitely for you. The writing is vivid in depicting the scenes in the ceremonies and Katie’s inner turmoil is put on full display.
