Sometimes being recognized by the nation isn’t a good thing. Ashley Brandt’s The Face You Know focuses on Maggie’s narration of how her fifteen minutes of fame could cost her more than her sanity.
Maggie participated in a show called Diamonds and Dames, where she lived in a house with other contestants trying to win Grayson Winters’ hand in marriage. When he chose Lacy Everman, Maggie returned to Texas to resume a quiet life. She runs into her study partner from college, Damon Ybarra and learns that he had never married. That evening, she finds an unmarked letter that had a picture of her in college and a message “You’re Next.” She learns that Grayson Winters was murdered and everyone that participated on the show was being investigated. She calls the police and gives them the letter. The local police don’t seem very concerned with the letter.
Maggie goes on a date with Damon only to discover the following Monday another letter has arrived. This one contains pictures of her at work, a parking lot, returning from her date with Damon, and one from the kitchen window taken earlier that day. She calls Damon and the police. Damon is a licensed private investigator and decides to help Maggie. However, as the days pass, Maggie becomes suspicious of the amount of control Damon has taken in her life and how quickly he shows up after each event that follows. Is it possible that Damon is her stalker?
This is an intense suspense novel that has multiple suspects and so many variables on who could possibly be after Maggie. Why they are after her is an unknown element added to the mystery. I highly recommend The Face You Know to anyone who loves a good mystery with dynamic characters.
