DEBBIE O.- 5 STARS

The landscape is dotted with pits manned by members of the Old Guard. The Old Guard is guided - mostly by memory - of The Twelve. Centuries ago, The Twelve established the Old Guard, trained them, and helped them build the walls that circle the pits. Then The Twelve slowly disappeared from view, believed to have retreated to their Temple.

Before they left, The Twelve established Baronies to oversee the communities that existed around and between the pits. Men for the Old Guard were recruited from these communities. Reed had been recruited as a young man and has been serving long, dull, odorous and bleak years as a member of the Old Guard on the walls of one of the pits. He has begun to wonder what it was all for. He is about to find out.

Meanwhile, The Twelve are stirring....

And the Baronies are trying to solve their own conflicts...

Some interesting plot twists, and unexpected alliances show up, and some surprising enemies as well. I'm looking forward to the next book.
