Joe is a professional baseball player - a skilled backstop and a steady hitter. He's finding that he's getting less play because of a new team member who is a stellar hitter, although a less skilled backstop. Joe is also trying to cope with missing his wife and new baby. His wife is tired of spending so much time alone when he travels and is threatening to leave their marriage.
To distract himself, he allows himself to get talked into accompanying friends to clubs in the evenings after games on the road. This leads him down a rabbit hole of sorts, where his life seems to go in directions he's pretty sure won't be good for his marriage or his job. But it's hard to resist.....
Lots of baseball, complete with slang that I had to guess at, not being a baseball fan. But it's certainly possible to see how the events in the story would play out as they did. It's rather gritty in places. I enjoyed the story.
